Did you know that in 2018 the EU are placing a ban on halogen bulbs?

From 1st September 2018, the vast majority of halogen light bulbs will no longer be available in shops across the whole of Europe.

So, why is there a ban on halogen light bulbs?

Halogen and incandescent light bulbs are largely inefficient with their energy, especially when compared to newer compact fluorescent lamps and LEDs. So the EU have decided to phase them out in a bid to reduce carbon footprints and become more environmentally friendly.

The phase out has already begun. In September 2009, 100W halogens were effectively discontinued, or made more efficient. Then, in September 2016, directional halogen bulbs such as spotlights and downlights were banned too.

The 2018 ban will see non-directional halogen light bulbs discontinued – essentially banning the import and sale of the average 60W halogen light bulb which may still be in use.

Which bulbs can you buy after 2018?

You will have two main options. The first is CFLs, or more commonly known as “energy saving bulbs”. These have already been on the market for a number of years. The second option is LEDs, which are becoming more widely adopted by businesses and homeowners around the country, and use the least electricity out of all the options.

These bulbs may cost more per bulb but these extra pennies can be gained back quickly from savings made via energy bills and lower maintenance.

A push towards more efficient lighting will help with sustainability and with your own energy demands too.
