On Thursday 17th May, a handful of Acorn employees swapped their office attire for old clothes and wellies to help the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust carry out work on regenerating the Salt Hill Stream in Slough, Berkshire.
The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust “Saving the Salt Hill Stream” project is working with local people, community groups and schools in Slough to improve the Salt Hill stream and its surroundings to create a cleaner, healthier watercourse that the whole of Slough can be proud of.
The team of Acorn volunteers spent the day at an area of the stream near Keel Drive allotments. They helped dig out an old set of dilapidated steps and prepare the foundation for the new set. They also helped finish laying a new set of steps on the opposite side of the stream and clear areas of weeds and overgrown plants.
Jon Coiley, Managing Director said ‘We have only recently introduced our volunteering policy and I am so pleased that we have members of our team that are keen to spend their time helping out with this project. As our head office is based in Slough, we will be offering more help with this area to help create a better local community.’
The ambition of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust is to create new wetlands in Slough, initially in Salt Hill
Park, and then later in Baylis Park. In some areas of Slough, the stream is hidden and inaccessible or forced to go underground, so our plan is to uncover it to make it more accessible for people to enjoy and to attract wildlife.
